# Group and expand table rows

> Organize a table into expandable groups so readers can move from a summary to its detail.

Group a table by a meaningful field, such as product category or month, and let readers expand a group to inspect its rows. Use this when one long table is difficult to scan.

## Before you begin

You need a table widget with the fields you want to group by and permission to edit the dashboard. The **Group** tab is available when grouping is supported for that table's data source.

## Set up row groups

1. Open the dashboard and choose **More options → Edit manually**.
2. Open the table's **Table Settings** control.
3. Choose the **Group** tab.
4. Under **Group by Field**, select **+ Add Subgroup**, then choose the field.
5. For a date field, choose the time bucket that matches the review, such as a month.
6. Add another subgroup when readers need a second level, such as category followed by month.

With multiple fields, **Nested** shows a hierarchy and **Inline** shows the grouping values together. Choose the layout that makes the relationship easiest to read.

## Add a summary

Use **Column Summarize** to choose the values to summarize and the available aggregation. For example, group by category and summarize revenue with a sum.

Check the meaning of the total. Summing monthly rates does not produce an overall rate; use an appropriate calculation when the metric is a ratio or percentage.

## Save and explore

1. Choose whether to **Expand groups by default**.
2. Select **Save Changes**, then save the dashboard edits.
3. Return to view mode and use a group's expand control to open its details.
4. Collapse the group to return to the summary.

## Keep the table readable

Use the **Schema** tab to hide columns readers do not need to see or adjust their presentation. Hiding a column changes its display; it does not remove it from the underlying data.

## Show a different follow-up question

For a separate chart or question, use the widget's **Related Questions** action. Add a related question from an existing result, configure it, and save it. Readers open available related questions from the widget's data context menu.

Row grouping and related questions solve different tasks: grouping organizes the current table, while a related question opens another view of the data.

## If you cannot expand the table

* Check that a group field has been selected and the dashboard has been saved.
* If the **Group** tab is unavailable, use [Drill Through or Records](/dashboards/how-to/explore-dashboard-data) for supported widgets.
* If a summary looks wrong, review the aggregation and the granularity of the original query.

## Expected result

Readers can scan a summary and expand the groups that need attention, without leaving the dashboard.
